What We Eat Is What We Become
FOOD, a simple four-letter word. It provides our body with energy that is required for pretty much everything we do.
How much have we complicated this word and attached so many meanings, labels, emotions and what not!!!
If We are what we eat; then we are not just putting food into our bodies but also all that baggage that we have attached to it:
Labels – Some of us eat very fast. We gulp down our foods without really tasting or enjoying it. We then feel bloated, stuffed, dissatisfied and still hungry. We are not aware what and how we are eating. Some of us find eating the food to be a chore or do it out of compulsion.
Observe yourself how often you go unconscious while you eat. How often do you shove down your food but don’t enjoy it ? What feelings do you suppress with food?
Now become aware of the different labels we have given to ourselves.
> Are you a compulsive overeater?
> Are you a poor eater?
> Are you a voracious eater ?
> Are you conscious eater ?
> Are you a forced eater – that someone has to force you to eat ?
Look what’s behind this label for you. Experience what’s behind this label. What are the thoughts & feelings connected to your label ? What are the pictures & beliefs that you have about being that way. See how this fits with your weight.
Phrases – How many food related phrases are a part of our vocabulary; “I grabbed a bite, I ate like a horse, I wolfed down a burger, I stuffed myself with cake”
What if we changed the way we phrased a sentence into something more energizing for our bodies; “I enjoyed every bite, I savored every flavor, the food just melted in my mouth”. Try this out and see if it makes a difference to what and how you eat.
Emotions – Behind most hunger feelings, there are emotions involved. Become aware of your emotions connected to the food. Next time you are hungry, first check: Are you really hungry or are you expressing/avoiding/resisting/defending an emotion ?
The emotions may be joy, happiness, anger frustration, gaining attention. sadness, depression , escapism, confrontation irritation, fun etc.
Many of us also turn to food for comfort, stress relief, or to reward ourselves.
You might reach for a bar of chocolate when you’re feeling down, order a pizza if you’re bored or lonely, or make a plate of french-fries after a stressful day at work. Emotional eating is using food to make yourself feel better—to fill emotional needs, rather than your stomach. Unfortunately, emotional eating doesn’t fix emotional problems. In fact, it usually makes you feel worse. Afterward, not only does the original emotional issue remain, but you also feel guilty for overeating. So next time you eat, check whether it’s an emotion calling out to you or genuine hunger.
