Making the Best of Meal Times
How much time does it take for you to have a meal?
In our fast-paced lives, most of us eat our meals very quickly. We don’t really spend time savoring our food, chewing it and paying attention to our body’s signals.
Did you know that it takes approximately 20 minutes from the time you start eating for your brain to send out signals of fullness? Leisurely eating allows ample time to trigger the signal from your brain that you are full and feeling full translates into eating less.
Eating slower gives your stomach more time to start working on the food. When you send an entire meal down your throat in five minutes, you may find yourself eating more that you require. Instead, if you take 20 minutes to eat the same amount of food, you’ll end up feeling satisfied and full.
20 minutes thrice a day doesn’t seem so difficult right? Yet we find so many things to do while having our meal. Do you talk on the phone, watch TV, have a meeting, read the newspaper or drive while eating? Do you discuss problems, gossip, fight while eating?
A meal is energy for your mind and body. If that is the time you are energizing, imagine the kind of energy going into your mind and body, if you do any of the above while eating.
So if you want to have a conversation while eating, then make it happy and enjoyable or spend that 20 minutes with yourself. Prioritize meal times so that there are no gadget in your hand, no paper, no watching TV and no angry conversation. No hurry while eating, grabbing your meal and running out of the house.
Eating with a relaxed mind and a calm body will change how you eat. Try out this new way of eating and check how you feel at the end of each meal.
