Eat What You Love!
When we look at what we really want to eat, we will be able to distinguish between two kind of foods : “Homing” and “Craving” foods.
How do you figure out the difference between these kinds of food?
Homing Food hums to us, it’s the food we long for especially when we are nostalgic. These foods usually stem from our childhood and have a lot of sentimental value. When we think of this food we generate a picture inside our minds, that comes from a past memory. When we eat this food it fulfils something deep within and is emotionally satisfying. We genuinely enjoy eating these foods!
For example: Julie enjoys Mac and Cheese and will choose it any day over a cheeseburger she sometimes craves for.
Sarita loves her sambar and rice. No other food, even from the fanciest of restaurants can substitute for the sambar she makes, in the way her mother taught her.
Homing Foods may keep on interchanging & varying till you are able to discover over a period of time; a few food items which will be with you for life.
Deepa (45, Housewife) “Last night I felt like eating chocolate pudding, so I just went ahead and ate it. I ate only one small bowl of that pudding and I felt fully satisfied all night long and I didn’t eat dinner.”
This was Homing food for Meera at that time. The body from within wanted chocolate pudding or an element that would be in the chocolate pudding.
Craving Food on the other hand, calls out loudly to you. You have seen it somewhere or someone has recommended it to you, it looks good, you think it should taste good ! However you don’t feel really satisfied after you have eaten it and/or you might feel bloated. When we think of this food it’s picture that comes from the outside.
Example: Rahul couldn’t stop himself from eating 2 pizzas at the new restaurant in town. Later on he had a tummy ache and gas and didn’t feel good at all.
Meera saw the steaming hot batata wadas and ate three plates. Afterwards she regretted eating so much and didn’t want to see food for the next 24 hours.
When you eat Homing food, you will automatically take in less calories, simply because you want less food and will be satisfied with less. So instead of gorging yourself with craving foods, you will be content with eating only as much as your body wants .
Satish (55, salesman) : ” All my life people told me what, and how much to eat! I never looked at what did I want…or even if I did, I did not know how to go about it.”
After Satish found out what he wanted, he ate chocolates and sweets for a week and lost 2 Kgs.
Try this fun exercise to find out what food is Homing to you:
Sit in a comfortable position, uncross yours arms and legs, loosen your clothes and relax.
Now imagine yourself walking through a forest. Enjoy the walk, being surrounded by trees, feel the breeze on your face and the quietness of the forest. You then notice a little cottage up ahead. The door is open so you walk right in. There you find tables full of all kids of food possible; starters, soups, salads, sandwiches, fruits, maincourse, desserts…..the list is endless.
You pick up a plate and fill it with as much food as you want. You can eat to your hearts content. No one is watching you so feel free to eat with your hands if you wish, chew with your mouth open and really relish the food in whatever way you like. Once you feel you have had enough, you leave the cottage and come back to the present.
Do this exercise every day for the next two weeks to get yourself more in touch with what you really want. Pay attention to the kinds of food that you put on your plate. You will slowly start identifying your homing and craving foods.
